Gishora Drum Sanctuary

A Family Trip to Gishora Drum Sanctuary

At M Travel and Tours Burundi, we believe that the most unforgettable travel moments happen when families explore together. Today, we had the joy of welcoming a wonderful family: a father, his wife, their five joyful children, and the beloved grandmother of the family. What made their day special? A visit to the iconic Gishora Drum Sanctuary, followed by a vibrant Bujumbura City Tour—a perfect mix of heritage and modern life.

Starting the Day: A Warm Welcome and Road to Gishora

The day began with excitement and smiles. After a comfortable pick-up, we journeyed north to Gitega Province, home to Gishora Drum Sanctuary, one of Burundi’s most sacred historical sites. Along the road, the lush green hills and peaceful countryside offered a perfect opportunity for the kids to see a different side of Burundi—calm, natural, and full of charm.

At Gishora: Where Drums Tell Stories

Once we arrived, the family was greeted with traditional hospitality. The Royal Drummers of Gishora performed a breathtaking drum ceremony—an experience that left everyone, young and old, wide-eyed with awe. The children couldn’t take their eyes off the energetic dance moves and majestic sound of the Ingoma (traditional drums).

Even the grandmother, with deep emotion in her eyes, shared how this experience reminded her of her youth and the importance of passing down traditions to the younger generation.

What Makes Gishora Drum Sanctuary Special?

  • Historical Roots: Founded by King Mwezi Gisabo in the 19th century, Gishora remains a stronghold of Burundian royal history.
  • Cultural Experience: Families can witness the sacred drum performances that once echoed through royal courts.
  • Perfect for Kids: It’s not just history—it’s fun, colorful, and interactive. The children even got to pose with the drums for photos!

Afternoon Delight: Exploring Bujumbura City

After the cultural immersion at Gishora, we made our way back to Bujumbura for a guided City Tour. The family visited iconic landmarks such as:

  • Livingstone–Stanley Monument
  • Downtown Markets and Artisan Shops
  • The Independence Hero Statue
  • Lake Tanganyika Boulevard for sunset views

There were ice creams for the kids and shopping for local crafts. The parents loved the relaxed pace of the tour, and the grandmother found a cozy spot to enjoy the breeze and view of the lake.
