Experience the best of Bujumbura with this private two-day city and Lake Tanganyika programme, designed for travellers with a short stay in Burundi. From the moment you arrive at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, every part of your visit is carefully coordinated to ensure a comfortable, safe and memorable experience.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred in a private vehicle to Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel, one of Bujumbura’s best-known lakeside properties. After checking in and taking time to refresh, you will begin a guided exploration of Burundi’s economic capital.
The Bujumbura city tour introduces you to the history, culture and everyday life of the city. Depending on your arrival time and the opening hours of the attractions, the programme may include visits to important landmarks such as the Independence Monument and Unity Monument. These sites provide an opportunity to learn about Burundi’s national history, independence and cultural identity.
You will also explore selected local markets, where you can experience the energy of daily life in Bujumbura. The markets offer a colourful introduction to local products, fresh produce, traditional fabrics, handicrafts and the commercial activities that support communities across the city.
A visit to the Musée Vivant de Bujumbura may also be included. The museum presents elements of Burundi’s cultural and natural heritage through traditional architecture, local crafts, historical displays and selected wildlife exhibits. Your guide will provide explanations and help you understand the importance of the museum and the traditions represented there.
The city experience continues through important historical neighbourhoods, administrative areas, the commercial centre and the Lake Tanganyika waterfront. Along the way, there will be opportunities to take photographs, interact with local people and learn more about the development of Bujumbura.
Meals, bottled drinking water and soft drinks are provided during the programme. At the end of the city tour, you will be transferred back to Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel, where you can relax beside the lake and prepare for the following morning’s wildlife experience.
On the second day, the programme begins early to take advantage of the cooler morning conditions and increased bird activity. At 7:30 a.m., you will depart on a guided engine-boat excursion around Lake Tanganyika and the wetlands near the Rusizi River.
The boat excursion offers an opportunity to observe hippopotamuses in their natural environment. Depending on the season and wildlife movement, you may also see crocodiles, waterbirds and migratory bird species. The area is known for its wetland vegetation, calm waterways and views across Lake Tanganyika.
As the boat moves through the lake and wetland environment, your guide will explain the local ecosystem, the behaviour of the animals and the importance of protecting the natural habitats surrounding Lake Tanganyika. You may also observe local fishermen carrying out their daily activities using traditional and modern fishing methods.
Wildlife sightings occur in a natural environment and cannot be guaranteed. However, the early-morning departure provides a good opportunity to experience the peaceful atmosphere of the lake and search for hippos, birds and other wildlife.
After the boat excursion, you will return to Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel to refresh, collect your luggage and complete the hotel checkout process. Your private driver, guide and security personnel will then transfer you to Melchior Ndadaye International Airport according to your confirmed flight departure time.
The US$640 package price is based on one traveller and includes private transportation, airport transfers, a professional driver, an English- or French-speaking guide, tour coordination, security personnel, meals, bottled water, soft drinks, entrance fees, museum fees and the guided Lake Tanganyika boat excursion.
Accommodation at Club du Lac Tanganyika Hotel is not included unless it is specifically added and confirmed as part of the final arrangement.
This private programme is ideal for business travellers, short-stay visitors, transit passengers and tourists who want to experience Bujumbura’s most important cultural, historical and natural attractions within a limited amount of time.
